MY PRACTICE

I am a licensed Psychotherapist. I have been practicing in the Buckhead area of Atlanta for over 35 years. My clients are individuals of all ages (young adults to people of advanced years), couples, and people in various relationships that are significant in their lives. My areas of specialization include depression, anxiety, relationship issues, and alcohol abuse/addiction problems.

When I first meet with a client I want to know what is most important to them to discuss and possibly change. I then tailor my therapeutic approach to best fit the client’s presenting issue, personality, and time frame. I use a Cognitive-Behavioral approach, helping my clients challenge and overcome self-defeating thoughts and behaviors. Together we will explore the client's existing strengths and abilities, discover new ways to enhance coping skills, and help to build hope and resiliency through all the phases of  life. 

About half of my clients come to me with concerns about alcohol or drug use. It is first important to determine whether the person is abusing alcohol/drugs or addicted to alcohol/drugs. This information helps to determine the direction of treatment. 

-  Persons who are abusing alcohol/drugs may be able to learn to control how much they drink or use drugs. A combination of individual counseling, family counseling, and education is used. If attempts to manage their use of alcohol or drugs continually fail, then we will need to re-assess. 

-  Persons who cannot control how much they drink alcohol or use drugs, in spite of negative consequences, may have the chronic disease of alcoholism. They will need more intense treatment either as an outpatient or inpatient. After a period of sobriety they will need continued counseling and support to increase the likelihood of maintaining sobriety.
